COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Using a community policing approach, the purpose of this pilot training is to prepare the School Resource Officer to facilitate a safe learning environment while fostering student achievement and well-being. This includes recognizing, analyzing, planning for, and effectively respond to challenges that disrupt the learning environment. 
 
This pilot training is for all school safety stakeholders including: Superintendents and School Administrators, Police Chiefs and Sheriffs, School Resource Officers, SRO Supervisors/Command Staff, and other student staff such as Counselors, Social Workers, Teachers, Chemical Health Providers, and School Nurses.
 
Pilot Training Topics:
 
The SRO: Operations and Expectations
Leadership of Effective SRO Programs, Whitewater Issues in School Policing, SRO Roles and Responsibilities, Supervising and Evaluating the SRO and the Program, Contracts and Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), and Operational Philosophies.
 
Adolescent Development and Mental Health
Understanding School Violence and Threat Assessment, teen development (Physical, Cognitive, Sensory and Motor, Emotional and Social); mental health disorders, special populations needs (IEPs, 504s, disabilities, ESL), de-escalation techniques, restorative justice, juvenile diversion and mediation, and prevention/intervention.
 
Internet Safety and Legal Issues
Internet safety, social networking, technology, cyber bullying, sexting, undercover chat, harassment, investigative strategies addressing Craigslist, Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. Legal issues including: use of force, search and seizure, data practices, juvenile delinquency, probation, mandatory reporting, restraining orders, parenting arrangements, and orders for protection.
 
Prevention, Preparedness, Response and Recovery
Emergency management planning, school needs assessments (safety analysis, safety surveys, and vulnerability studies), Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), operational policies and procedures, partnerships, physical security, school safety teams, universal procedures, drills, and exercises; individual participant emergency plan review; threat identification, analysis and response (active shooter, bomb threats, fights and intruders).
 
Practical Exercises
Through comprehensive table-top exercises, participants will demonstrate the application of their knowledge and skills of the week’s learning.
